Consists of early, anonymous translations of selections from van Mander's Het Schilderboek and Bellori's Vite de' Pittori. These early biographies of European artists have been called "basic sources" containing "valuable information," but also noted as being "gossipy" and occasionally flawed.

Carel (or Karel) van Mander was a Flemish painter, poet, and artists' biographer who was born in Meulebeke, near Courtrai, West Flanders, Belgium. He travelled in Rome and Vienna, eventually settling in Haarlem, where he established an academy. He is perhaps best known for his Het Schilderboek.
